This blog is the often amusing, sometimes dangerous den of two British writers of contemporary and paranormal romance, and urban fantasy. Most of our stories are based in the UK and our heroes and heroines are passionate Brits - yes, passionate Brits exist! Come on in out of the cold, pull up a chair and see for yourself...

I am now going to eat lots of chocolate...

It's here... FINALLY! The Demon Bride was "birthed" onto the Kindle platform 3.5 hours early, on 30th August - it's a Virgo!!!

I can't tell you how ecstatic I am :D

I'm not a Kindle (or any kind of) bestselling author; in fact, I'm predicting that I don't sell more than 30 copies in the next 72 hours. At this precise moment, I don't care. I LOVE this gig. I love writing and bringing these stories to you. My very small fan base means so much to me, that they get so enthralled in my stories :)

So, here's where to go to hear all about Mary & Gwain in book three:

"Away" from work.

I have a nice five days "away" from work, although even as I say this, I'm sort of laughing to myself, because my head never stops buzzing with characters and plot.

I won't be online so much over the next week.

I literally CANNOT WAIT for The Demon Bride to come out. All my other projects sort of feel like they're on standstill until this book is released, and if I was in any doubt before, I am now certain that I am a linear writer: it's next to impossible for me to write two books at once. I can sort of do it a little, but not really. And the book that I am writing, I need to write in order. I can't write chapter one, then chapter twenty, then back to a scene that will probably fit somewhere in the middle.

This is why writing The Demon Bride was a killer for me: I had to keep going back to previous scenes to fit things in after almost every chapter. I wanted to be linear - the book didn't want to be written that way, lol.

Alone
But I digress... am I ever really away from work? No. I'm not. I don't know if I can be, and I'm not sure why. I've always been very "in my head". I've always felt solitary, even when surrounded by people. I don't ever think I really come out of my head. I don't know if it's a good thing or not. Sometimes I think it is, and sometimes I think it isn't.

What about you? Are you in your head all the time? Does "real life" bring you out? Are you happy to be out? Do you find real life all shades of mundane, or do you find it enriches your writing? (<--- I believe this is how it should be, not that it always is, lol...)

Lastly, take a look at the blog post I wrote yesterday on my own blog. In relation to the above, and in an attempt to live in the real world a bit more, I am making my Facebook profile dormant... it will be a testing time, but I always look forward to a challenge!

A Round-Up - and burning the candle at both ends

It shouldn't surprise anyone that I forgot to post yesterday. I think I need to set an alarm somewhere for Thursday blogging, lol. I've tried that before, and the problem is, that whenever the alarm goes off I'm always in the middle of something else, so I think, "Oh, I'll have to remember to do that later," and then I just forget o_O

If you're on my FB page or Twitter you'll know I'm kinda burning the candle at both ends at the moment.

I also have three separate work issues to deal with and my emotional responses to those, and it's taking it out of me a bit, but that's just life...

I'm leaving everyone with the Round-up that I posted on my own blog: ARC reviews of The Demon Bride are starting to come in :) And there's a giveaway for anyone who hasn't read The Witching Pen series yet...

Excerpt: Prologue from The Demon Bride, by Dianna Hardy (released 31st Aug)

(Cross-posted from The Witching Pen Novellas website)

The prologue sets the scene for Gwain and Mary's story. (However, just like in the other two books, other characters' stories, and the plot, will also continue to unravel). Released in eBook format on 31st August, and in paperback on 31st October. I've also included a little bit of Chapter One for you ;)

Prologue

Her fingernails dug into his wrist, as her scream pierced the air.
“God damn it!” he cursed. “Don't you let go of me – don't let go!”
But this was a battle they were both losing. The pulsing abyss beneath her was relentless, swallowing everything too close to it, like some ominous, living black hole, and she was more than too close to it – she was dangling above it, her feet touching the hungry darkness.
Terror gripped her – an unforgiving fear she'd never known, and she'd known a lot of fear.
For a second, exhaustion took her over, and her fingers slipped a little.
“No!” he shouted, and squeezed his hand in a tighter vice around her wrist. His other hand – the left one – was buried in the earth. He had pegged himself into it in an attempt to stop their forward movement. He had his legs entwined around a tree trunk, but the tree was now coming up at the roots, bowing to the force of the suction. Every muscle in his body was straining, bulging unnaturally – she wondered if he'd ripped any yet. Hell, he was strong – but not strong enough.
She looked up, forcing her head to move against the pull of the abyss, and met his eyes. Steely grey, and usually so steady, they were now marred with panic and anger. But still he held her gaze, and still – despite the horror of what was about to happen – she found a semblance of peace within his presence.
“Let me go,” she whispered.
Her answer was a tenacious growl.
“It'll pull you in if you don't. It doesn't want you, it wants me. Let me go.”
He tightened his hold on her.
Damn it! She won't risk him. Not now, not ever.
She spoke to him in the Old Tongue. “I’m not supposed to be here – it was always going to be this way.”
Determination hardened his features.
My God, he's stubborn.
“I love you,” she whispered, and let the truth of her words touch him, seep into him, through the all-consuming connection they shared – one which she suspected was about to be ripped to shreds.
He was momentarily stunned at the weight behind her words. She had him off-guard, and in that split second, with a strength she didn't know she possessed, she brought her left hand up, fighting against the vacuum with all she had, and tore into his cheek with her nails.
Startled, his grip loosened, and it was enough.
She yanked her right hand out of his.
His look of shock quickly turned to one of both rage and desperation when he finally realised what she'd done.
Blood seeped through the cuts on his cheeks. Her own face stung in response.
“Forgive me,” she pleaded. “You mean too much to me.”
Tears welled in his eyes.
Tears? Oh, no, m’angeal, don't cry. I'm not worth your tears.
“I'll find you, I swear it,” he choked out.
As the abyss closed up around her, she uttered a prayer, and she had no idea whether she was praying that he would, or that he wouldn't.

Chapter One

Mary jolted awake, then moaned as the pounding in her head dominated all her senses. A nightmare? No. This pounding felt like normal pain – the kind you had when you hit your head, not the type of pain that seared her during her nightmares.
What had woken her up? A dream? But she didn't have dreams – not normal dreams, anyway...
She tried to grasp at it and failed, the throbbing in her skull preventing her from going in too deep.
And she was hot – too hot – baking hot.
Where the fuck am I?
And far too quickly, she remembered her encounter with the monster in the prison, and being dropped into the hole in the ground. A portal of some kind? The memories rushed at her – they came so quickly, she thought she might puke. Ugh. She remembered being thrown down and cracking her head on the cement.
Shit. She hoped she didn't have concussion.
Gingerly, she tried to move and realised that something was crusted onto the left side of her face, which smarted big time – she guessed it was her blood. Her face felt mangled. She must have done it when she'd cracked her head. A glance down at herself told her she was naked. That meant she'd been undressed.
Fuck.
She mentally assessed her body, trying to figure out if she'd been messed with in any way. It felt the same as usual, apart from her arms. Looking up with effort, she could see that her hands were tightly secured above her head in metal cuffs, each attached to a stone wall by short, linked chains.
She gave her hands a little wriggle. Pins and needles shot down to her elbows, which ached. She winced. Could this be any worse?
“She awakes,” came a voice, low and soft, to her right.
It just got worse.

The Demon Bride: my own personal Hell.

Paperback edition,
released 31st Oct, 2012
I am potentially about 15,000 words away from finishing The Demon Bride. OR... I'm 25,000 words away, because it could be stretched into an 80,000 word novel. We'll see... but it's all taking off and I'm scared as hell. Can it live up to the first two books? It's darker, it's deeper, it's ... so much more complicated, and definitely more abstract. And although the romance aspect of the trilogy (boy meets girl and overcomes obstacles to be together) ends with this book, not everything will be wrapped up in a nice little bow, because we will be entering the sexy world of urban fantasy in the spin-off novel The Last Angel, and this novel will continue to take these characters forward... the ones left standing, anyway...

So I'm left with having to wrap up enough, to keep readers who don't want to continue to The Last Angel happy, but to keep those that do, on the edge of their seats.

I am mad. I must be. This book is driving me into certified lunacy.

It's gotten to the stage where I'm promoting The Demon Bride and the Omnibus Edition (well, I have to start now to get people interested), and I'm quaking in my boots, terrified that I can't do the series justice.

Anyway... deep breaths... why don't you come join me? There's enough room in Hell for everyone...

Closing Time...

I am feeling slightly schizophrenic.

I'm preparing a cover and blurb reveal tomorrow for my new series for 2013, Project Veil. And at the same time, I'm writing The Demon Bride and bringing The Witching Pen Novellas to a close. Even though I like to work on two different projects at a time, I'm actually finding it a little hard this time around, and I think it's because The Demon Bride is kind of intense - being inside those characters are ... well ... consuming. So working on two different projects has me feeling a little loopy!

It's also the first ever series that I've ever brought to a close (although there will be a spin-off novel). And there's a learning curve right there. It's HARD closing a series! No wonder J R Ward is on book 11 of the BDB. Seriously, sometimes, you just can't say goodbye!

This is me in a nutshell at the moment: I'm between a rock and a hard place. The rock is Project Veil, and the hard place is The Witching Pen Novellas. (Or it could be the other way around, I'm not sure...) I'm ending one phase and beginning another. It's uncomfortable. My safe zone is definitely being stretched!

Anyway, tomorrow at 8pm GMT, I shall be unveiling Project Veil. Join me :) It's a public event on Facebook - just click Join: http://www.facebook.com/events/241325909314521/

The Demon Bride
(paperback cover)
And you can keep up to date with my progress of The Demon Bride here: http://www.diannahardy.com/the-demon-bride.html When I finish that book, I'm gonna have a Witching Pen street party! (Hell, yeah, that would be awesome!)

...every new beginning comes with
some other beginning's end.

Trying New Things

Spring is a time of new things, new beginnings and making things grow. It's also a time when authors get tetchy - we want to see some results, dammit. The sun is shining, this means we're ready to go barreling ahead with our goals and dreams, because we sure as hell want to see progress this year! And we're tetchy because March and April never quite move as fast as we'd like it to in terms of the above - in terms of showing us that progress.

I've seen, heard, read about, a lot of authors this month, feeling despondent, doubtful and uninspired by their work. It's okay. Don't panic. It's the time of year - it'll pass :)

Strangely, and sadly, there have been some deaths over the past ten days or so. I can think of three authors from the top of my head, who have lost someone dear to them. What's going on? Not sure, but to those of you it concerns, you have my condolences.

New things: yes. Without planning to, I'm trying something new with my latest project, The Demon Bride. I wrote some weeks back that I was a linear writer. Funnily enough, I'm having to go with the flow here, and write this book in a non-linear way. I'm finding it hard to get the characters just right, to get the plot (and the sub-plots) to mesh in the right places, and so on. This is not an easy book to write. Having said that, I do have the inspiration, so it's just a case of going with the flow. I'm not stuck, I'm just being challenged - then again, so are my characters. Do you find that? That you sort of go through what your characters go through sometimes?

New things: the going with the flow is working. I'm writing a chapter, breaking it up, fitting another chapter between the broken bits, and it's coming together, albeit slowly. I don't think I'm going to be happy with this book until the very end. I keep going back to change things at the moment. But I know that it will be okay, because my characters tell me so ... because it always is, in the end :)

New things: if you're struggling with something at the moment, I urge you to "give in". Go with it. Be challenged and try something new. It's the time of year when new things demand recognition - it's the time of year when doing new things works.

Go for it, and enjoy the Spring :)

The Writing Buzz!

eBook released 31st August, 2012
Paperback released 31st October, 2012
I love writing the beginning of a book. The beginning is where you get the 'new' buzz. The middle always frustrates me -- you lose the buzz, and you have to concentrate more on plot and how to move things forward; and the ending is hard, but my favourite bit. That's where you get the BIG buzz: you get all shaky and you can't eat for days. (At least, that how the buzz affects me, anyway.)

I've just started writing The Demon Bride. I'm almost 10,000 words into it (which I estimate is about a sixth of the book). It's dark and gritty, and possibly erotic in ways it shouldn't be. Ultimately that's up to the reader to decide; I'm not specifically writing it to be erotic, just like I didn't write "the safety pin scene" (yes, it will forever be called that in my mind) in The Sands Of Time to be erotic -- nevertheless, I read back over it and think, whoa, that's actually kinda hot in a twisted way. I did write it to be intense and dark. But then I am dealing with some pretty dark characters, and some even darker mythical lore...

So anyway ... the buzz...

It's way better than chocolate, on the same level as coffee (sometimes better), and I really can't say it's better than sex without offending anyone who's in a relationship with an author (so I won't). But one thing I will say, is that when I'm riding that buzz, wild horses can't drag me away from writing the story. The buzz owns me. Completely.
